I also recently started a hot sauce company with the artist Luka Fisher and the Los Angeles-based chef Royce Burke. It's a memoir-fiction hybrid, a horror story about my last year as a porn "star."
My latest novel, The Wolves That Live in Skin and Space, is available now. My third book, Body to Job, will be released in late 2017 through Rare Bird Books. For the past year, I've been working on more long-form projects. On top of that, I write - sometimes for websites and print publications. But I'd say that more than half of my clients are from porn. My day job is video production and post-production. And I wasn't the type of person who could perform in mainstream porn without pharmacological assistance.
The job wasn't worth putting my health at risk. During the last trip to the ER, a doctor told me that if I kept abusing erectile dysfunction drugs, I could end up with serious long-term damage. It's very common.Īs a result of taking those types of medications, I ended up in the hospital for priapism. In porn, we take Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, injections.
In professional sports, men take steroids. Like many male performers, I had become reliant on erectile dysfunction drugs as performance enhancers. I quit performing in porn basically overnight. When and why did you stop performing in adult movies? Perhaps the pseudo-monopolization of MindGeek - which owns PornHub, RedTube, YouPorn - has prevented the rest of the industry from being able to compete on any equal footing. The business model completely changed and aside from one company - MindGeek - porn has yet to really catch up.
It had plenty to do with the rise of piracy and with free tube sites like PornHub. But I saw the crews shrink, the number of shoots drop, and work dry up for a lot of people. Men were able to work consistently if they had a good reputation. My income wasn't drastically effected - I think because there were always so few male performers compared to female performers. I did witness a deterioration of the industry-at-large over that same period of time. But near the end of my career, I began to focus more on doing scenes and on being a "porn star." I was a full-time student and just trying to pay my bills while in school.īy the time I graduated, or at least the year after, I had begun to find some personal validation from my work in the adult industry. Is it lucrative to be a male performer in porn - and did that change over time?įor the first several years of my career, I wasn't really focused on making money in porn or in treating it as a business.
